In 2009, an official statistics branch classification revealed that the State of Hesse had 18o companies operating in the chemical industry. The AGV HessenChemie, however represents a field much larger than this.

In December 12, 2009, 233 companies with a total of 92,121 employees had become a member of the AGV HessenChemie. There is a discrepancy between these figures and those reflected by the statistics because, depending on how their main activities are defined, the statistics classify several member companies as belonging to other industry sectors. A number of service sectors which in past were strictly excluded, but which to a great extent can today be considered independently operating companies, are not included in industry statistics.

The AGV HessenChemie’s plastics processing specialist department advises 39 member companies with approx. 5,966 employees.

As is the case with other industries, the chemical sector in the State of Hesse is represented by a large number of mid-sized companies. 99 of companies included in the official statistics employ less than 200 workers. But companies with 200 or more employees play a larger role in shaping the Hessian chemical industry than is the case with other sectors.
